Google's Dreambeans AI Story App Is Now in India in 14 Languages: How It Works and the Privacy Settings to Check First

Google Labs' Dreambeans turns what is in your Gmail, Photos, Calendar and YouTube into a daily set of AI-made stories, and India is its first country outside the U.S. What it does, which languages it speaks, and what to check before you connect your accounts.

Google has brought Dreambeans, an experimental app from Google Labs that turns what is in your Google account into a short, illustrated set of stories every day, to India. It is the app's first country outside the U.S., and it speaks Hindi, Gujarati, Tamil and ten more Indian languages. Because it reads from apps like Gmail, Photos and Calendar, it is worth five minutes of setup before you tap "connect everything." Here is what Google and TechCrunch have reported, and a simple checklist. Every fact is linked.

1. What launched, in one minute

Google's India blog says that "starting today", Dreambeans is expanding to people in India aged 18 and above, on Android and iOS (Google India Blog). TechCrunch reported on November 2, 2026 that India is Dreambeans' first market outside the U.S., and that the launch comes less than two months after Google opened the app to all eligible U.S. users aged 18 and older (TechCrunch).

Google describes Dreambeans as a way to "connect you with what matters without the endless scroll": stories about places to explore, new arts and crafts, or a reminder of upcoming local events. You can open any story to learn more, bookmark it for later, or share it (Google India Blog).

2. How Dreambeans works

Dreambeans builds its stories from the Google apps you choose to connect. Google lists Calendar, Gemini, Gmail, Photos, Search and YouTube (Google India Blog). You do not type a prompt: according to TechCrunch, the app uses Google's Personal Intelligence technology to draw on those connected services and proactively generate personalised, illustrated stories (TechCrunch).

TechCrunch also reports that the app started with static AI-generated illustrations, and that Google recently added a feature that uses its Veo video model to animate images in select stories. Google says your feedback is used to make your stories better over time (Google India Blog).

Why India first? Google product manager Gozde Oznur told reporters that Indian users had shown strong interest, and that India stood out for its high overlap of people using Gemini, Gmail and Google Photos (TechCrunch).

3. Languages: 14, but one at a time

Google says Dreambeans is available in 14 languages in India, including Hindi, Bengali, Telugu, Marathi, Tamil, Urdu, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Odia, Punjabi, Assamese and Nepali (Google India Blog). TechCrunch describes this as 13 local languages alongside English.

There is one catch that matters in India: you can pick only one language at a time for your stories. Oznur said the app can read information across Google services in several languages, but it cannot currently write stories that mix languages (TechCrunch). So if you write and read in Hinglish or "Gujlish", expect stories in one language, not the mix you actually use.

4. The privacy controls Google has described

Dreambeans is only as private as the apps you connect to it, so these are the controls to know. Everything in this table was said by Google's product manager in a press briefing, as reported by TechCrunch.

ControlWhat was said
Choose the appsYou pick which Google services to connect, and you can disconnect them at any time.
Delete your dataYou can delete your Dreambeans data from inside the app. Information you delete from the connected services is also removed from Dreambeans' personalisation.
Avoid topicsYou can tell the app to avoid certain subjects, including business-related information, and it will try to adjust its stories.
Who sees storiesGenerated stories are visible only to the account holder.
Which accountsOnly personal Gmail accounts can use it, not enterprise (work) accounts.

TechCrunch also flags two honest limitations. First, connected services can hold sensitive personal information that some people may not want an AI app to use just to receive personalised content. Second, a proactive app can surface memories you may find upsetting; Oznur acknowledged that Dreambeans could generate stories involving people who have died, and said users can tell the app to stop showing certain subjects, similar to the memory controls in Google Photos (TechCrunch).

5. What it means for Indian business owners and creators

This section is our own reading, not something Google has said.

  • Keep work data out of it. Dreambeans works only with personal Gmail accounts, not work accounts. But many small Indian businesses still run on a personal Gmail ID. If that is you, your invoices, client mails and meeting invites sit in the same account the app can read, so either leave Gmail and Calendar unconnected or use the "avoid business-related information" control described above.
  • It is a personal feed, not a marketing channel. Google has not announced any way for businesses or creators to publish into Dreambeans or advertise in it. The stories are private to each account holder, so there is nothing to "optimise" for today.
  • Watch the shared-phone problem. In many Indian homes and shops one phone is used by several people. Because stories are built from one Google account, anyone holding that phone may see stories drawn from that account's mail, photos and calendar.
  • It is still an experiment. Dreambeans is a Google Labs app. TechCrunch reports Sensor Tower estimates of about 55,000 U.S. downloads since June, with downloads falling 84% month over month to about 5,500 in October. Google is exploring ways to make the app more actionable, so features may change (TechCrunch).

6. Before you install: a 6-step checklist

  1. Install it only from the official app store listing for Dreambeans by Google Labs, on a Google account that belongs to you personally.
  2. Connect one or two apps first (for example Photos and YouTube), not all six.
  3. If your personal Gmail doubles as your business email, leave Gmail and Calendar unconnected, or tell the app to avoid business topics.
  4. Pick the one story language you read most comfortably; mixed-language stories are not supported yet.
  5. Set "avoid" topics early for anything sensitive: health, money, or people you have lost.
  6. If you stop using it, disconnect the apps and delete your Dreambeans data inside the app.

7. The bottom line

Dreambeans is a glimpse of where personal AI is heading: instead of you asking questions, your phone quietly reads your digital life and hands you a daily story. Google says it picked India first after the U.S. because of strong interest from Indian users, and it launched with 13 Indian languages. Treat it like any app that reads your inbox and photos: connect only what you are comfortable with, and keep business data separate.
